Romans along the Rhine

Explore along the limes

In this family exhibition, you will see exceptional utensils, gifts and items found that for centuries lay hidden along the Roman border, or the Limes. Experience the brand-new interactive personalised stories told about soldiers, their wives and children, as well as traders and servants. In addition, the visitor learns how everyday food found its way to the Netherlands two thousand years ago.

By integrating watch, do and read tasks from start to finish in the exhibition space, both children and their parents learn more about the customs and manners of our distant ancestors.

“Synergique is genuinely interested in the content and have done a good job in converting this to visual elements. They have considered carefully how visitors can best view the objects and allow them to think about the signifance of these objects.”

A day in the life of a Roman child

The youngest visitors step into the shoes – or perhaps the sandals? – of a child that lives from day to day in a Roman area. Everything is different: your name, the food, the language … But there are also new toys, you get a new nickname and there are games. You get a new task booklet and stickers as well as a new name, you learn how to cook and are even allowed to put a curse on someone!

Interactive games

Romans along the Rhine is a classic exhibition with an interactive layer. In the interactive eating game, you learn which ingredients were introduced by the Romans and, using project mapping, the altar of Quintus Antistius Adventus can be read once more!
