The Right to Choose

650 Years of Building Democracy Together in the Province of Utrecht

The exhibition ‘The Right to Choose’ at Utrecht Archive shows how our democratic society came into being over six centuries. Through historical documents, stories from remarkable witnesses and interactive assignments, visitors discover the fascinating path to democracy

Synergique designed an educational experience in which students travel through time along six crucial moments: from the Stichtse Landbrief in 1375 to universal suffrage in 1919. Each period is brought to life by an authentic witness who tells his or her story, supported by original archival pieces and hands-on activities.

Crucial democratic moments

An introductory animation film takes you on a remarkable journey. Through the paper layers of historical documents you dive into time and discover six crucial democratic moments.

“With Synergique we created a beautiful exhibition in a short time. Synergique thoughtfully considered how we could make it accessible and appealing for upper secondary school students. Now that school groups visit almost daily, we see how well the various elements of the exhibition work.”

Interactive time travel

Six historical moments come to life through hands-on assignments: from sorting seals with the Stichtse Landbrief to building a democratic house of cards.

Debate

A separate debate room invites discussion about current propositions. Contemporary provincial council members introduce dilemmas that students discuss together.
