The Birth of the City
In search of medieval Amsterdam
In the exhibition The Birth of the City, we travel back to the Middle Ages — to the very beginnings of Amsterdam. Through eight different themes, you’ll be taken on a journey through the centuries and discover how the foundations for the Amsterdam we know today were already being laid in medieval times.
We shine a new light on the Middle Ages. Throughout the space, you’ll find eight glowing beacons where archaeological treasures meet archival documents. Through playful animations and an audio tour, you will discover that the themes that occupied the people of Amsterdam 750 years ago have barely changed: Trade, religion, care, and safety.

Back to where it all began
An animated film shows the transformation of the landscape, revealing how, after a devastating storm — the All Saints' Flood of 1170 — a small settlement began to grow along the Amstel River.
Cast in new light
Spread throughout the space are eight light beacons, each with its own theme. At eye level, archaeological finds seem to float, telling a unique story together with archival pieces.
The Oldest Known Amsterdammer
Come face to face with the oldest known inhabitant of Amsterdam. Can you guess what his name was?
Stories unfold
Animations reveal the stories hidden within the documents. Watch as a charter unfolds, telling of the archers' guilds, or a book of city regulations reveals rules on adultery and combating the plague.
Interactive timeline
Place a token and discover how Amsterdam evolved during the Middle Ages. A floor projection shows where your chosen theme — care, religion, or safety — played a role in the city.
